Subsurface Circulations within Active Regions

چکیده
Using high-resolution ring analysis (HRRA) we deduce subsurface flows within magnetic active regions and within quiet sun. With this procedure we are capable of measuring flows with a horizontal spatial resolution of 2◦ in heliographic angle (or roughly 20 Mm). From the resulting flow fields we deduce mean inflow rates into active regions, mean circulation speeds around active regions, and probability density functions (PDFs) of properties of the flow field. These analyses indicate that active regions have a zonal velocity that exceeds that of quiet sun at the same latitude by 20 m s, yet active regions advect poleward at the same rate as quiet sun. We also find that almost all active regions possess a mean inflow (20–30 m s) and a cyclonic circulation (≈ 5 m s) at their peripheries, whereas their cores, where the sunspots are located, are zones of strong anticyclonic outflow (≈ 50 m s). From the PDFs, we find that active regions modify the structure of convection with a scale greater than that of supergranulation. Instead of possessing an asymmetry between inflows and outflows (with a larger percentage of the surface occupied by outflows), as is seen in quiet sun, active regions possess symmetric distributions. Signatures of emerging subsurface structures in the Sun
The complex dynamics that lead to the emergence of active regions on the Sun are poorly understood. One possibility is that magnetic structures (flux tubes, etc.) rise from below the surface by self induction and convection that lead to the formation of active regions and sunspots on the solar surface. For space weather forecasting, one would like to detect the subsurface structures before they...
متن کاملFormation of Active Regions: Observations and Theory
Active regions can be used as a diagnostic of the sub-photo-spheric activity. In this review I will discuss how the physical conditions in the subsurface layers of the Sun form and modify the three dimensional complex of the active region. Many characteristics of active regions are related to the conditions under which magnetic ux tubes are generated and to their evolution as they rise in the s...

متن کاملVariations of Sulfur Dioxide Deposition Velocity Resulting from Terrain-forced Mesoscale Circulations
Variations of dry deposition velocity for S02 due to terrain-forced mesoscale circulations have been explored for northeast Colorado and south Florida. A mesoscale numerical model was used to obtain the wind and turbulence data needed to calculate the deposition velocities. Computations were performed both with and without consideration of observed land use characteristics. The results indicate...
متن کاملDifferentiation of active tumor from edematous regions of glioblastoma multiform tumor in diffusion MR images using heterogeneity analysis method
Background: Due to intrinsic heterogeneity of cellular distribution and density within diffusion weighted images (DWI) of glioblastoma multiform (GBM) tumors, differentiation of active tumor and peri-tumoral edema regions within these tumors is challenging. The aim of this paper was to take advantage of the differences among heterogeneity of active tumor and edematous regions within the gliobla...
